ISO standards most notably apply to the size, height, and type of container.

• Size: The standard ISO container sizes are 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, and 48ft.
• Height: ISO containers are available in two heights: standard (8’6) and high-cube (9’6)
• Type: ISO container types include general-purpose containers, refrigerated containers (also known as “reefers”), open-top containers, platform containers, and tank containers.

Whether you should rent or buy a shipping container depends on your specific needs. As a general rule of thumb, if you plan on keeping your container for more than six months, buying a shipping container is the more affordable solution.

As a general guideline, a shipping container delivery requires the length of the container plus an additional 60ft of space. This means that for a 40ft container, you will need 100ft of straight space for the delivery truck to drop your container in place.

Straight space isn’t the only consideration for positioning your container. You will also need at least 10ft of width and 14ft of clearance height for the truck to maneuver your property. When the container is tipped off, the "peak height" will be around 16ft, so you need to ensure enough clearance at the delivery spot to accommodate this height.
